Basically, yes, they’re the same, but “Would you prefer…” is a polite way to offer a choice.

This structure is used to express what we want someone else to do, but it’s more a wish than a request. Example:
I’d rather you you didn’t go.
= I don’t want you to go. It’s my wish.
